This week we
are
showcasing wines from two of the world's most distinctive wine growing
countries, New Zealand and Australia. We are pleased to feature the
Oyster Bay Pinot Noir and the Yalumba Y Series Unwooded Chardonnay. As
always, we invite you to join us at either of our locations this
Saturday for a
sample of this week's featured wines.
Although world
renowned
for some of the most celebrated Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand is gaining
notoriety for other varietals. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling are
just some of the up and coming wines from New Zealand. The country's
climate, warm during the day from strong sunlight and cooler at night
with
breezes from the sea, creates a great environment for the cultivation of
grapes.
The maritime influence creates long and slow ripening periods that make
New
Zealand wines so unique.
Yalumba is
Australia's
oldest family owned winery. Our featured white wine is from the Yalumba
Y
Series which highlights single varietal wines that show exceptional
quality at
a great everyday price. The Unwooded Chardonnay is a full bodied, fruit
driven wine that accentuates the unique style and expression of South
Australian wines. It will pair perfectly with lightly grilled chicken
or
fish dishes and a summertime salad.
The philosophy of Oyster Bay is to produce fine,
distinctly regional
wines that are elegant and assertive with glorious fruit flavors.
Wine Spectator: Light, polished and highly perfumed, with lavender
and spice overtones to the currant and cherry flavors, lingering easily.
Drink now through 2014. 7,000 cases imported. -HS
Wine
Maker's Notes: With every vintage we are working with more established
vines from a steadily growing number of small vineyard blocks. Each site
is chosen specifically for its uniform soils of moderate fertility
providing for slow ripening and enhanced flavor development. With Pinot
Noir, the fruit is always the primary focus, but of course we have many
opportunities to influence it with traditional winemaking techniques to
add subtlety and complexity. We use both barrel and tank fermentation
and we also mature with a mix of new and older French oak.
Tasting Notes: Oyster Bay Marlborough Pinot Noir is elegant
cool climate Pinot Noir at its best. Fragrant, soft and flavorful with
aromas of ripe cherries, plums and gentle sweet fruit tannins to provide
serious structure and length. more
For five generations spanning 160 years, Yalumba,
Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size
and stature, embodying all that has made their Australian
wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over.
Wine Maker's Notes: Our Unwooded Chardonnay style is captured
by picking the grapes when the flavors are fresh and lively from the
vineyards bearing Chardonnay fruit with lifted tropical flavors. In 2009
the grapes were harvested early to create a crisp and "food-friendly"
wine. Cool processing and fermentation were used to retain the freshness
of the grapes, and the wine was allowed some time on its yeast lees
after blending to build some richness of flavor.
Tasting
Notes: Pale straw with light green hues, the Yalumba Y Series Unwooded
Chardonnay displays aromas of honeydew melon and nashi pear, with hints
of grapefruit and pineapple. The palate is silky with flavors of ripe
nectarines, guava and grapefruit with a fresh acid finish. Serve with
Thai chicken salad or gnocchi with sauteed prawns and a burnt butter
sauce.more
