Summer
is around the corner and in anticipation of warm summer days we
selected two great wines that are perfect to beat the heat. This week we
are showcasing Venta Morales Tempranillo and Dona Ermelinda White.
The Iberian Peninsula,
comprised of Spain and Portugal, isrenowned for it's winemaking expertise and
uniqueness of terroir and varietals. We hope you will find these
selections as interesting as we did. The white blend from Portugal
showcases an excellent combination of flavors. The complexity of the
wine is rather impressive, while the citrus notes make it a perfect wine
for the warmer weather. The Tempranillo grape is most commonly
familiar to wine aficionados in Rioja wines. The smooth, medium to full
bodied character of this wine makes for diverse applications, from
grilled meat food pairings to drinking by itself.
Venta Morales Tempranillo is a Jorge Ordonez
selection that comes to us
from La Mancha, Spain. La Mancha is the largest wine growing region in
the world where the Tempranillo grape flourishes. The warm growing
season in the Mediterranean climate produces dark ripe fruit with
incredibly balanced tannins. The grapes come from 33 year old vines and
are 100% tank fermented, as opposed to oak, which leaves the wine
vibrantly fresh without overpowering the rich flavors and aromas of
Tempranillo.
Robert Parker: The 2009 Venta Morales is 100%
Tempranillo raised in stainless steel. Deep crimson-colored, it emits
aromas of spice box and fragrant black cherry. On the palate licorice
and other black fruits emerge leading to a finish with no hard edges.
Drink this excellent value over the next 2-3 years.
Tasting
Notes: This juicy, vibrant red really over-delivers, demonstrating
loads of black cherry, raspberry and dried herbs. It possesses some
balanced acidity and shows off good tannic grip on the finish. more

Dona Ermelinda White is from the Casa Emerlinda
Freitas winery in Fernando, Portugal. This fourth generation winery has
been bottling their products on an independent label since 1997. The
winery is equipped with the latest technology and combines modern and
traditional wine making practices. This wine is perfect as an aperitif
or paired with light salads and white meats.
Tasting
Notes: Straw colored wine with greenish tint, intense fruity aroma with
notes of tropical fruits and honey on the palate. It is full-bodied
with great balance between the components: acidity / sugar / alcohol /
Madeira. Persistent and long it finishes clean and nice.
