This Merlot shows abundant fruit and sweet caramel notes on the nose that lead to a palate filled with bright raspberry and plum flavors accented by hints of sage and toffee. The tannins are medium-bodied in keeping with the austerity of the vintage and the restrained use of new oak allows the vivid fruit to claim center stage. Enjoy this wine with anything grilled or with a spicy carbonara pasta.
| Wine maker notes |
| In the Alexander Valley, Merlot thrives when planted on bench land vineyard sites where afternoon sun exposure and well-drained soils create an excellent environment for cultivating balanced vines. Warm days and cool evenings allow for optimal maturation of the berries and the development of soft, rounded tannins. In this region, Merlot typically ripens in the middle of the harvest season meaning a few weeks after Sauvignon Blanc and a few weeks before Cabernet Sauvignon. After harvest, the berries are crushed then undergo a 3-day cold soak during which time dark fruit flavors and aromas are extracted. After inoculation with a selected strain of yeast, we ferment the fruit for approximately 7 days on skins to extract the bright fruit and silky texture. Extended aging in a blend of American and French oak barrels contributes further roundness and complexity to the wine. |
