Wildekrans was purchased in the 1970’s and set up as a mixed farming operation of wheat, cattle, sheep, ostrich, fruit, wine and table grapes. With time it became obvious that Wildekrans was an ideal spot to grow vines. The cool Atlantic sea winds and lean soils allow their grapes to reach optimal ripeness and impart the characteristic cool climate aromatic profile that their grapes are renowned for.
Today Wildekrans consists of 35 hectares of grapes, all planted in a clay rich subsoil mixed with a topsoil of stone and sand which ensures well structured subtle white wines with great acidity, balance and full, rich, earthy red wines with silky tannins.
Add to this the meticulous cellar care (sensible management and cellar design, gentle treatment of grapes, minimal handling, modern cooling and hygiene) as well as exceptional vineyard care, (early morning harvesting, closeness of cellar to vineyards, canopy management and strict yield control), it is inevitable that great wines will be produced.
Wildekrans Estate is a boutique winery nestled in the serene Bot River Valley, the winery and vineyards are located in the Walker Bay wine ward, approximately 100km from Cape Town. Walker Bay is also the breeding grounds for the famous Southern Right Whale. It is considered as one of the most exciting “New World” wine areas.
Wine maker, William Wilkinson, takes pride in producing fine wines that reflect the true expression of the Bot River terroir.
Wildekrans has won loads of laurels since its early days. Recently the Pinotage Barrel Selection was chosen for the South African Airways First Class wine list, while the Pinotage was selected for the Business class list, in addition to a number of high scores and reviews from well respected publications.
Wildekrans has been one of the leaders in establishing Walker Bay as a prime red wine-growing region, with award winning Cabernet, Pinotage, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
The Wildekrans mission statement is “to produce wines that compete with the top twenty percent of the world’s premium white and red growing regions. These wines must be easy to enjoy, good with food and represented in all price categories.”
