Color: Very deep, almost impenetrable ruby red
Aroma: Broad, elegant, very complex, with sweet notes of morello cherry, ripe plum, wild berries, mingling with intense notes of spice.
Palate: Mouth filling and well-structured, velvety; sweet, close-knit tannins and acidity in perfect harmony with the wine’s richness and concentration; long, lingering, mineral fruity finish, with wild berry flavors that merge with intense and balsamic spicy notes.
Wine Advocate 94 points - One of the great red wines of northern Italy, the 2009 Friuli Colli Orientali Rosazzo Sosso is a blend of Merlot, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and a small percentage of Pignolo. Opulent, round, generous and finely-tuned in terms of the purity of its aromas, this beautiful red blend shifts the focus from Friuli’s plentiful white wine potential to the red. This is a signature expression from one of the area’s most talented and historic producers. It shows the deft hands of its creator. Black fruit, spirited cherry, bitter chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco make a long lasting impact. You can taste the oak here, but those flavors are well contained and integrated. The finish is extra supple and long. The best aspect, however, are those characteristic tones of sour fruit and tangy black pepper that must come from the two indigenous grapes used in the blend. Drink: 2015-2022.
James Suckling 93 points - This is such a clean and beautiful merlot of blueberry and smoky meat character. It’s full-bodied with round tannins and a fresh finish. Very Pomerol-like. A small amount of refosco in the blend. Good now but hold for 2017.
Wine Spectator 90 points - Rich and smoky in flavor, with black currant and black raspberry fruit, accented by gumdrop and ground anise hints. Creamy in texture and well-knit, this presents lingering herb and game notes on the finish. Should match well with grilled lamb. Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Merlot and Pignolo. Drink now through 2019. 500 cases made.-AN

Created in 1989, this wine is named after the Sossˇ stream, which runs at the foot of the hill where the grapes grow. Made with carefully selected and oldest vines of Merlot and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso grapes, together with a small percentage of Pignolo, from Rosazzo. Soss˛ is the result of skilful vinification and barrique maturation that lasts for 18 months. A supremely complex and well-structured wine, it stands out for its elegant, ripe, sweet, fruity tannins.
