Displays the characteristic elegant structure of wines from the Ribera del Duero. Aromas of raspberry, violet, rose petal and blueberry are well integrated with soft tannins, licorice and dried cherry flavors on the finish.
Wine Advocate 91 points - A sensational value from Ribera del Duero (which rarely produces interesting wines for under $25), the 2011 Barco de Piedra is 100% Tempranillo aged five months in a combination of French and American oak (85% and 15% respectively), all three-year-old used barrels. It exhibits notes of flowers, licorice, new saddle leather, black currants and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, complex and on a fast maturity curve, it should be consumed over the next 2-3 years. ” (Aug 2012)

Barco de Piedra is made from organic, estate fruit grown on the hillsides of the Quinon Estate. El Quinon is located in the heart of the western district of Ribera del Duero, about a mile north of the Duero River and 4 miles east of Vega Sicilia. Of the two main growing areas in Ribera, the west side is not as exposed to frost and enjoys more moderate temperatures. Cool nights, minimal rain and older vines produce small berries with a high skin-to-juice ratio and strong tannins, thereby diminishing the need for oak.
Technical notes
After sorting, the grapes were destemmed, crushed and cold macerated for 2-3 days. Fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures, the wine was macerated for an additional 8 days and then aged for five months in three year old 300 liter French (85%) and American (15%) oak barrels.
