An opaque ruby core that is edged by brightly youthful magenta rim, this wine offers pronounced aromas of plums, vanilla and gently roasted spices. The plush core of dense, sweetly ripe dark fruit is laced with chocolate and spice. The generously rich flavors are underpinned by supple oak tannins and bright acidity.
Wine Advocate 88 points - The 2010 Petit Frere is the first time that the estate has released a second label. A blend of 54% Syrah, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot, it sees 2 months in 25% new French oak. It has a slight reduction on the nose with dense blackberry and banana skin scents that are quite difficult to penetrate (especially for a second wine.) The palate is chewy on the entry with sappy blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with cracked black pepper and a touch of fennel. It is quite muscular on the finish. Perhaps they should rename this: “Not So Petit Frere.” Drink 2014-2019.

Anwilka Vineyards, is a picturesque 98 acre property located just a few kilometers from the ocean in Stellenbosch’s prime Helderberg region. Established as a joint venture between Hubert de Bouard of Chateau Angelus, Bruno Prats of Chateau Cos d’Estournel and Lowell Jooste of Klein Constantia, their objective was to produce the ne plus ultra of wine. Robert Parker called the maiden 2005 vintage of Anwilka, ”The finest red wine I have ever had from South Africa.” In May 2012, Anwilka Vineyards merged with another well-known estate, Klein Constantia. Each property maintains its own identity and together, aims to produce a new benchmark in quality for South Africa. The vineyards enjoy a pronounced maritime influence given their proximity to the sea. This, combined with the well-draining old ferricrete soils, provides the perfect backdrop for rich and focused wines of unsurpassed elegance. A strong emphasis is placed on viticulture - yields are managed by rigorous pruning and green harvesting while hydric stress is avoided by minimal irrigation.

We are very pleased to introduce our new little brother, “Petit Frere”, the 2nd wine from renowned
Stellenbosch property, Anwilka, which merged with Klein Constantia Estate in mid-2012. The name is a
tribute to Anwilka’s French Bordeaux heritage, owed to co-owners Hubert de Bouard and Bruno Prats.
After establishing Anwilka in 2005, Prats and Bouard have expertly guided the property and its wine
production, resulting in unique wines of a style highly celebrated both locally and internationally.
Grapes were handpicked in small crates about 1-2 weeks before those destined for Anwilka. Bunches were sorted before de-stemming, and the berries re-sorted prior to crushing, with the crusher positioned above the stainless steel tanks to allow gravity-feeding. Lengthy pump-overs and extended maceration ensured gentle extraction of ripe polyphenols. Varieties were matured separately in 25% new French oak for six months before being blended together and aged for an additional six months.
Anwilka Vineyards is located just 7 kilometres from the ocean in Stellenbosch’s prime Helderberg region. The property was purchased in the late 1990s and extensive replanting of 40ha of vineyards comprising primarily cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and some merlot followed.
The then owners, Lowell Jooste (the former co-owner of Klein Constantia) along with internationally wellknown Bordeaux wine personalities Hubert de Bouard (co-owner of Chateau Angelus in Saint-Emilion) and Bruno Prats (former owner of Chateau Cos d’Estournel in Saint-Estephe) released the eponymous maiden vintage blend of Syrah-Cabernet in 2005. Anwilka has since established a worldwide reputation for this red blend which has been described by Robert Parker as “the finest red wine I have ever had from South Africa”.
Stellenbosch is recognized as the Cape’s premium red wine producing district. The significant maritime influence in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch enables exceptional fruit quality. The matching of grape varieties to specific sites was carefully considered. Soils are of moderate potential, allowing low vine vigour and consistently healthy vines. A gentle slope assisting drainage during the winter rains. Minimal irrigation is used, and good water retention capacity avoids excessive hydric stress.
The vineyards are run by manager Piet Neethling and the wine made by young South African oenologist Jean du Plessis. Much guidance is provided by Prats, who successfully directed Cos-d’Estournel, the leading Medoc 2nd growth, for 28 years and de Bouard who steered Angelus to achieve St-Émilion first-growth status.
In May 2012 Anwilka Vineyards merged with Klein Constantia, purchased in 2011 by Zdenek Bakala and Charles Harman. De Bouard and Prats remain in the newly-merged company as minority shareholders and Jooste becomes a non-executive board member. The primary objective of sparing no cost when it comes to wine quality, as previously stated by Jooste, de Bouard and Prats, has not changed. Bakala and Harman explained, “The Stellenbosch vineyards of Anwilka will be a great addition to our portfolio, and we are very happy to welcome Hubert and Bruno as partners. Together we want to establish Anwilka’s positioning as a global South African wine brand.
