Powerful and masculine, it offers nicely harmonious notes of dark sweet fruit and hints of earth that are backed by velvety tannins and balanced acidity.
Wine Advocate 90 points - The 2011 Clos del Portal Somni produced exclusively with Carinena and Syrah is still in need of time to absorb the effect of the 14 months the wine spent in French oak barrels that for now take over the show, displaying a balsamic nose of spices, eucalyptus, toasted bread, peat, dark chocolate and leather with hints of Chinese ink, black licorice and wet paint. The palate is much more expressive of the quality of the fruit than the nose and reveals fine-grained tannins, piercing acidity and pure flavors with some balsamic aromas making a comeback in the aftertaste. Clos del Portal is located in the Priorat region of Spain, nestled between El Lloar and Bellmunt. The vineyards are planted above the Siurana river and rise to the spurs of the Montsant mountains. Owner Alfredo Arribas fell in love with the rugged terrain of this region and in 2001 bought 90 acres, to which he planted vines on 34 acres. The estate vineyard is a connected patchwork of individual parcels which have been divided based on soil composition, exposition and terrain. The soils at the estate are mineral rich, but it is the different proportions of oxidized slate and other compounds in each parcel that lend complexity and elegance to the final cuvee. The estate is planted to five varietals Grenache (five different clones); Carignan, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Monastrell. The fruit is hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard. The estate is organically farmed and Alfredo is in the process of transitioning to biodynamics. Each parcel is vinified separately the grapes are cold macerated for short periods of time to minimize the potential for over extraction.
Technical notes
The Carignan and Syrah used for this cuvee were the latest to ripen this blend was aged for 12 months in oak.
